The Medina of Tunis is one of the most complete and well-preserved historic urban ensembles in the Islamic world. Founded at the end of the 7th century, it developed through successive Islamic dynasties and became the capital of Ifriqiya. The medina represents a living city shaped by centuries of social, political, and religious continuity.
Its compact and organically evolved layout consists of narrow winding streets, shaded alleyways, and over 700 monuments, including mosques, madrasas, mausoleums, palaces, and traditional souks. The Al-Zaytuna Mosque, at the heart of the medina, is a symbol of spiritual authority and intellectual heritage, dating back to the 8th century. Urban gates like Bab el-Bhar and Bab Jedid, and palatial residences such as Dar Ben Abdallah and Tourbet el Bey, showcase a blend of Andalusian, Ottoman, and indigenous architectural styles.
Homes are typically inward-looking, featuring central courtyards, domed halls, intricate tilework, and carved wooden elements. The souks maintain traditional trades such as leatherwork, textiles, perfume-making, and copper crafts. These economic and cultural activities have supported the medina’s continuity as a vibrant center of urban life.
Today, the medina remains densely populated and active, though it faces modern pressures including infrastructure aging, population density, and commercial encroachment. However, coordinated conservation strategies, supported by national authorities and international cooperation, focus on maintaining the architectural integrity, public spaces, and artisan traditions.
The Medina of Tunis is not just a monument of the past, but a dynamic urban space where heritage is lived, transmitted, and renewed every day.
