Chinguetti, often referred to as the “Seventh Holy City of Islam,” was founded in the 11th century and reestablished as a key caravan center in the 12th–13th centuries. Situated on the Trans-Saharan trade routes, the town became a center of Islamic scholarship, pilgrimage, and commerce, flourishing for centuries as a cultural crossroads in West Africa.
Its architecture reflects the ingenuity of desert urbanism. Built primarily from dry stone and adobe without mortar, the ksar is composed of narrow, winding alleys, inward-facing courtyard houses, and thick stone walls that help moderate the harsh Saharan climate. The most iconic structure is the 13th-century Friday Mosque, known for its austere Soninké style, flat roof of palm beams, and square minaret—believed to be one of the oldest still in use in the Muslim world.
Chinguetti’s legacy as a center of knowledge lives on through its manuscript libraries, which house around 6,000 texts covering theology, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and poetry. These manuscripts, preserved for generations by local families, offer rare insights into the intellectual currents of medieval Islam in the Maghreb and beyond.
However, the city faces ongoing threats. Desertification, sand encroachment, seasonal flooding, and economic decline have endangered both its physical heritage and its living culture. Conservation efforts by local authorities, international organizations, and NGOs have focused on stabilizing buildings, protecting the mosque, and digitizing manuscripts to safeguard Chinguetti’s fragile legacy.
Despite these challenges, Chinguetti remains a unique living monument—an enduring symbol of Saharan scholarship, religious devotion, and architectural resilience.
