Timgad, officially founded as Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi, is one of the most complete surviving examples of Roman urban planning. Built around 100 CE under Emperor Trajan, it was designed as a colony for Roman veterans and played a strategic role in securing the frontier of the Roman Empire in North Africa. The city was laid out in a rigid orthogonal grid, with streets intersecting at right angles and organized around a central forum.
The city’s layout features all essential components of a Roman town: the cardo and decumanus (main streets), a basilica, baths, markets, temples, and a well-preserved theater. Among its most remarkable monuments is the Triumphal Arch of Trajan, a three-vaulted sandstone structure embellished with Corinthian columns, originally erected in the early 3rd century. Another significant structure is the city library, one of the few known from antiquity, which could house thousands of scrolls.
Timgad reached its peak in the 2nd and early 3rd centuries CE, with vibrant civic life and monumental architecture. The city declined after successive invasions, including Vandal and later Byzantine periods of control, before being abandoned by the 8th century. Buried under sand for centuries, the site remained remarkably well-preserved and is often referred to as the “Pompeii of Africa.”
Today, Timgad is a vivid testament to Roman engineering and town planning. Conservation efforts focus on stabilizing its sandstone ruins and protecting its iconic monuments. The ancient theater still hosts cultural events, including the annual International Festival of Classical Music, reconnecting contemporary audiences with this enduring legacy of Roman civilization.
