Sacred Heart Cathedral, known locally as Cathédrale du Sacré‑Cœur, is the most significant ecclesiastical structure in Brazzaville and the oldest standing cathedral in Central Africa. Positioned atop the Butte de l’Aiglon, it dominates the city skyline with its twin towers and slender central spire. Constructed between 1892 and 1894 under the direction of Bishop Prosper‑Philippe Augouard, the cathedral symbolized the Christian mission’s presence in French Equatorial Africa.
Originally Romanesque in style, the church saw substantial modification in the 20th century. Twin towers were added in 1904, and further renovations were conducted in 1952 and 1993 under architect Roger Erell, who incorporated modernist motifs that subtly contrast with the structure’s historic base. The eastern entrance is flanked by polychrome statues of Saints Peter and Paul, dating from before 1914, and features arched niches and finely patterned brickwork.
The cathedral has played a key role in the nation’s spiritual and public life. It hosted General Charles de Gaulle during his visit in 1944 and received Pope John Paul II in 1980. The building also serves as the final resting place of Cardinal Émile Biayenda and continues to be a venue for high-profile state and ecclesiastical ceremonies.
Maintained by the Archdiocese, the structure remains in excellent condition and is in daily use. Though not on the UNESCO World Heritage List, it is considered a cornerstone of Brazzaville’s religious and architectural identity, merging faith, history, and political memory.
